Assistant to the Director of Personnel


  1. Ability to deal effectively with associates, union leaders, applicants and public

  2. Knowledge of, and demonstrated skill with, modern office practices, procedures and technology

  3. Ability to understand and carryout complex written and oral instructions

  4. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing

  5. Minimum of three years of experience in confidential human resource work.

  6. Ability to supervise office staff

  7. Experience working in MUNIS or the ability to quickly learn how to work with MUNIS

  8. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

Reports To:

Director of Personnel

Job Goal:

To assist the Director of Personnel in the full range of district personnel and labor matters.

Performance Responsibilities:

  1. Performs assigned duties and special projects for the Director of Personnel

  2. Assigns work to and supervises clerical staff assigned to the Personnel Department

  3. Researches and prepares confidential personnel documents as requested

  4. Composes answers to routine mail and e-mail and responds to telephone inquiries

  5. Assists in the preparation of the Hamden Public Schools budget, and completes

the budget projections

  1. Prepares, completes and maintains all documents needed to complete District-based, State and Federal reports

  2. Participates in the recruitment of school district personnel

  3. Works in collaboration with the Payroll Office regarding salaries, raises, and other related payroll-oriented matters

  4. Maintains up-to-date personnel files on all school district employees

  5. Monitors the preparation and distribution of agendas and minutes for the Personnel Committee of the Board of Education

  6. Completes all new hire letters and retirement letters

  7. Verifies all certified staff and prepares the ED126

  8. Inputs all degree changes for certified staff

  9. Posts all open and/or vacant positions

  10. Updates seniority list for all collective bargaining units as required by the respective Collective Bargaining Units

  11. Assumes all other responsibilities as assigned and directed by the Director of Personnel, Superintendent or designee.

Terms of Employment:

Twelve-month work year and full benefits package including Medical and Dental benefits, paid holidays, vacation, personal, sick and bereavement days, retirement plan, life insurance, matching Tax-Sheltered Annuity

This is a non-union position. Salary range begins at $65,000 annually, and is negotiable depending upon demonstrated and verifiable skills, experience, and expertise in the area of Personnel.


Performance of the incumbent will be evaluated annually by the Director of Personnel.
